The Liver Cleanse

The liver, meaning 'life' or 'live' is the largest gland in the body and one of the most important for overall health. Some of it’s functions include storage of vitamins, minerals and sugars; the creation of immune substances; purification of the blood via the neutralisation of poisons; produces heat to maintain body temperature; excretes waste substances from the break down of dead cells; regulates digestive secretions; controls many hormonal processes and plays a vital role in menstruation and menopausal phases. Fasting is very important as any intake of food means work for a convalescing liver.

Home liver cleansing

This simple liver flush can be done daily for 5-10 days but can be kept up for a month or two with good results. Upon rising and on an empty stomach mix up the following in a large glass:

  • A cup full of freshly squeezed citrus juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • Spring water
  • Optional - clove of garlic and piece of fresh ginger

Do not eat anything for at least an hour afterwards and follow this drink with 2 cups of detox tea (plantain leaves, liquorice root, barberry root, 3 juniper berries, mullein flowers, cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, fennel seeds etc). Drink plenty of water each day and eat well- fresh veg etc.

5 Day Deep Liver Cleanse

This is designed for more serious disorders to cleanse and dredge the liver deeper and more intensely. It incorporates a fasting programme.

Day 1

Upon rising drink up to a litre of spring water to flush the digestive tract. Within an hour prepare the following drink in a blender:

  • 600ml citrus juice (lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit etc)
  • 600ml of spring water
  • 1 teaspoon of a mix of milk thistle, dandelion root and gentian tinctures
  • 1 or more cloves of garlic
  • 1-4 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 piece of fresh ginger root

15 minutes after this drink 2 cups of tea made from any of the following herbs: Gentian, chamomile, peppermint, cleavers, liquorice, cardamon pods, 3 juniper berries and a touch of freshly ground black pepper.

Lunchtime have a fresh juice and raw salad made of fresh vegetables (leaves, carrots, olives, mushrooms, onions etc) and sprouted seeds and drink herb teas. Include plenty of dark leafy greens and make up a salad dressing of olive oil, cider vinegar, lemon juice and your favourite spices. Drink a cup of potassium broth (recipe below). If you are hungry before or after lunch have some diluted fresh fruit smoothies or fresh fruit.

Stop all vegetable food by 5 pm, but continue with fruit juices, fruit salads, smoothies and herb teas for dinner in the evening.

Day 2

Same as day 1

Day 3

This is your juice fast day. Start as usual in the morning but for lunch have fresh vegetable juices, herb teas and potassium broth. For dinner have diluted fruit juices and herb teas.

Day 4

Same as days 1 and 2

Day 5

Start the day as on day 1 the after lunch slowly ease your way back into more 'normal' eating, keeping it light and based on whole fresh foods and grains.

For the purposes of this cleanse it is best not to mix fruit and vegetables together in the same meals or to eat them too close together. Allow at least an hour between each type of meal or juice. This cleanse can be done twice a year or can be followed by the kidney cleanse for even more dramatic results.

Potassium Broth

This will flush the system of unwanted salts and acids whilst providing a concentrated quantity of vitamins and minerals. Make it after breakfast so it is ready for lunchtime.

Fill a large pot with 25% potato peelings, 25% carrot and beetroot peelings, 25% chopped onions and garlic, 25% celery and green leaves. Cover with spring water and bring to the boil, simmering on a very low heat for about an hour. Season with herbs or spices to suit your taste (not salt) and leave to stand until ready to drink at lunchtime. Strain and drink half of the liquid, leaving the remainder in the fridge for the next day.

Remember to use only organic fruit and vegetables whilst cleansing to avoid filling up the system with toxic pesticides and fertilisers etc.
