Travel sickness
Travel or motion sickness is the condition where nausea and vomiting may occur when subjected to continuous motion as when travelling by car, boat, aeroplane etc. The exact causes of motion sickness are not fully understood but it is generally agreed that a conflict occurs between the visual senses and the inner ear which senses motion. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting (which does not relieve the nausea), dizziness, vertigo, pale skin, cold sweats, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell. Have a tub or jar of fresh olives with you and eat a couple the moment you feel motion sickness may be setting in. Avoid large meals before travel, especially fatty or carbohydrate rich meals. Avoid alcohol before travel, including the night before. Eat a light meal high in protein before or during travel. Ginger is a tried and tested remedy to help alleviate travel sickness. Use fresh, crystallised, candied, in capsules or added to herbal teas. Legendary herbalist Dr Christopher recommends making a tea by very gently simmering (do not allow to boil) 25g each of powdered or dried cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg in a pint of water for 10 minutes. Pour the liquid into a jug containing 25g of spearmint leaves and allow to stand for 20 minutes. Strain into a bottle for travelling and drink it a teaspoonful at a time, as needed. Try to remain calm as stress and anxiety tend to make symptoms worse. Looking out of the window during travel can lessen symptoms. Activities such as reading may cause or worsen symptoms. Fix any cool air vents onto your face and head as this can lessen symptoms. Listening to your favourite music may help to lessen discomfort. Some people find that chewing mint gum relieves their symptoms.General characteristics
