The word 'stamina' means different things to different people but essentially it can be described as the ability to endure physically, to resist disease, to recuperate from disease quickly and thoroughly, the strength and vigour of body and /or mind, the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort and so on.

In physical terms it can be related to your immune function, nutritional and energy reserves, good digestion, effective elimination of wastes (via the liver, bowels, kidneys, lymph, lungs and skin), adrenal exhaustion, stress levels, emotional state, sexual or physical endurance and overall energy and vitality. In other words to achieve stamina is to achieve good all round physical and mental health.

It is important that all channels and systems of elimination are working well so that waste materials are not congested in tissues. Gentle cleanses of each eliminatory system can be undertaken from time to time to help with this.

Eat a diet rich in whole fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds, nuts, sprouted seeds, leaves, flowers, nutritional herbal teas and juices and plain water. Eat organic foods wherever possible.

Limit or avoid all foods that are processed, contain chemical additives, pesticides and other agricultural chemicals, refined carbohydrates, over cooked foods, processed fats and oils, foods high in refined sugar, excessive meat and dairy products.

Beetroots and fresh beetroot juice can improve physical stamina and endurance as it directly nourishes the muscle tissues and enables them to work for longer periods before suffering from fatigue. Drinking 500ml of fresh juice daily for a week has been shown to enable cyclists to cycle 16% longer before feeling tired.

The adaptogens are a group of herbs that either directly or indirectly by helping to promote stamina by increasing the ability to resist disease, improving physical endurance and strength, counteracting the physical and emotional effects of stress and promoting a sense of well being generally. These include siberian ginseng (eleutherococcus), astragalus, ashwagandha, rhodiola root, maca (Lepidium peruvianum), schisandra, reishi and other medicinal mushrooms, Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), suma (Pfaffia paniculata)and both American (Panax quinquefolius) and Asian (Panax ginseng) ginseng. Select one or two of these to help increase stamina.

Strengthen the adrenal glands by using a formula of 3 parts hawthorn berry, 3 parts hawthorn flowers and 1 part liquorice root tinctures. Dosage for maintenance could be 1 teaspoon of the mix in a little water three times daily for several weeks. Avoid liquorice if you have high blood pressure.

A good all round tonic tea to help increase vitality and nourish the nervous system could include equal parts of gotu kola, oatstraw and nettle..

Damiana can also be useful for its stimulating tonic action on the nerves.
