Scarlet fever

General characteristics

General characteristics

Scarlet fever (scarlatina)is a relatively mild bacterial infection caused by the streptococcus bacterium (group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus). It is spread by droplet transmission for coughs and sneezes etc. It is most commonly seen in young children and is extremely rare in adults.

Symptoms include a reddened face, a whiter ring around the mouth, swollen strawberry like tongue, swollen neck glands, tonsillitis, sore throat, rash on the rest of the body, chills, body aches, loss of appetite and fever. The rash is very red and looks very much like sunburn. The symptoms are caused by the body's reaction to the toxins produced by the bacteria. After the infection has passed the skin often becomes dry and peels off.

Complications are rare and the infection usually runs its course over several days. Healing objectives are to keep well hydrated and nourished and to ease any symptoms with herbs and natural healing.

Diet and lifestyle

Diet and lifestyle

Eat plenty of anti-oxidant rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, freshly made juices, herbal teas and water. Keep the foods light and watery, avoiding heavy foods such as meats, refined carbohydrates and starches, junk and processed foods and drinks.

Sip at a large glass of freshly squeezed citrus juices throughout the day.

Useful herbs

Useful herbs

Take up to 5 half teaspoons daily of echinacea tincture to boost the immune response.

Gargle with a few drops of myrrh and goldenseal tinctures if the throat is very sore.

To ensure that the skin is sweating out the toxins, speed up resolution and to help reduce the temperature drink a tea made from yarrow, marigold, vervain, hyssop, peppermint, boneset and elderflower. Use a teaspoon of each herb and add 1.5 pints of boiling water. Leave to stand for 10 minutes and pour off small cupfuls to sip throughout the day (older children and adults). For the very young (under 18 months), give a teaspoon of the tea every hour or so.

Natural healing

Natural healing

Get plenty of rest and stay warm and cosy but ensure your room has a supply of fresh air.

Try a spoonful of cider vinegar in water sipped throughout the day to ease symptoms and speed up resolution.
