General characteristics

General characteristics

Measles is an infectious disease caused by a virus in the Paramyxovirus family. It is spread through droplets in sneezes, coughs and other mucous secretions and enters via the respiratory tract or conjunctiva of the eye. The measles virus is thought to remain alive for around 2 hours outside of the body. It is most common in young children but can affect older children and adults. Malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency are a major risk factor for both contracting measles and suffering more severe consequences.

Once the measles virus enters the body it goes to the lymphatic system where it enters the lymphocytes (white blood cells) and begins to slow down the immune systems ability to reproduce new white cells and produce antibodies against the virus. This leaves the body vulnerable to other infections such as pneumonia and croup, as the immune system is generally depleted and weakened. The measles virus then runs its course in the body before the immune system eventually begins to deal with it, usually within a couple of weeks.

Symptoms of infection often begin with a runny nose, sore or red eyes, sensitivity to light, high temperature and fever, cough and sore throat and then a rash that first shows on the face (often inside the mouth also) before progressing down the neck and chest to the rest of the body. Diarrhoea may be present and the person needs to ensure they drink plenty of fluids to stay properly hydrated. Serious complications tend to occur in those who are already immuno-compromised or malnourished but can include inflammation of the brain and meningitis (approximately 1 in 1,000 chance), eye damage and deafness.

It is interesting to note that the measles virus is being investigated for its potential to target and kill cancer cells and to inhibit infection from HIV virus.

Healing objectives are to ensure adequate fluids are taken, to gain good nutrition-preferably in juice form, allow the fever to run its course but ensure the temperature does not get too high and get plenty of rest in a darkened room. Do the right thing and inform your doctor, your childs school and anyone else who has come into contact with you over the last few weeks that may be at risk from infection (eg. pregnant women, un-vaccinated).

Diet and lifestyle

Diet and lifestyle

Keep the diet light, fresh and watery, based on organic fruits and vegetables, fresh water and herb teas.

Foods or supplements rich in Vitamin A are known to reduce the severity of the dieasese and greatly reduce the likelihood of eye damage occuring from measles infection. Best plant sources include

  • all leafy greens
  • sweet potatoes
  • pumpkin
  • carrots
  • winter squash
  • wheatgrass
  • spirulina
  • chlorella
  • grapefruit
  • cantaloupe melon
  • red bell peppers
  • orange bell peppers
  • goji berries

A process of heavy metal and toxin removal called chelation has helped many sufferers recover or reduce the severity of their symptoms.

Take a teaspoon of cider vinegar in water up to 3 times daily for its cleansing, energising and probiotic effects.

Try taking a teaspoon of organic, cold pressed edible coconut oil daily for its anti-viral and energy promoting actions.

Useful herbs

Useful herbs

To ensure that the skin is sweating out the toxins, speed up resolution and to help reduce the temperature drink a tea made from yarrow, marigold, vervain, lemon balm, peppermint, boneset and elderflower. Use a teaspoon of each herb and add 1.5 pints of boiling water. Leave to stand for 10 minutes and pour off small cupfuls to sip throughout the day (older children and adults). For the very young (under 18 months), give around a half teaspoon of the tea diluted in water or milk every other hour or so (see individual herb entries for exact dosage for small children).

Red clover and violet leaves will both benefit the skin, lymph and relieve cough.

Adding half a teaspoon of prickly ash bark to the above formula will help to quickly bring out any rash and resolve the condition quicker.

Add an equal quantity of burdock root decoction to the above formula to speed up cleansing and ease and soothe the skin.

Bathe itchy or sore eyes with a mix of chamomile, raspberry leaf and eyebright tea (also helps prevent possible damage and/or complications with the eyes) with a tiny pinch of goldenseal powder added.

Immune enhancers such as echinacea, turmeric, olive leaf, reishi mushroom, thyme and cleavers.

Natural healing

Natural healing

If you have mercury fillings in your teeth you may want to look into having them safely replaced with a non toxic alternative.
Stop using toxic chemicals in the house for cleaning the home, toiletries, washing clothes etc and switch to more natural, less toxic alternatives.
Add a pinch of blue green algae powder to juices as this has been shown to have anti-viral potential.
Grapefruit seed extract has anti-viral properties.
