ME

General characteristics

General characteristics

M.E is short for Myalgic Encephalopathy or Encaphalomyelitis. Myalgia alludes to the muscular pain and encephalopathy to a malfunction in certain brain functions. It is very similar to the conditions termed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Post Viral Syndrome, so called Gulf War Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Immune Disorder.

M.E was first written about in the 1930's and is classified as a chronic and potentially debilitating neurological disorder. Its onset is usually associated with a viral infection of some sort that goes on to affect many nervous functions within the body. It is generally accepted that the condition has many similarities with post-polio syndrome. Diagnoses of M.E have been rapidly increasing year on year since the 1980's and before. My gut feeling is that there is a strong link with the lethal concoction of environmental factors that weaken our immune systems and general vitality such as multiple vaccinations, processed foods, pharmaceutical drugs, GM products and air, water and food pollution. Consistent findings amongst sufferers include evidence in the body of persistent viral infection, nervous system damage, immune system and muscular abnormalities.

Symptoms include severe tiredness and fatigue after slight exertion, muscle pains and spasms, flu like sensations in the body, depression, anger or tearfulness, swollen glands, sore throat, headache, dizziness, lack of ability to concentrate or think straight, clumsiness, sleep does not refresh, constant need to sleep, exercise makes everything worse, food allergies and sensitivities and digestive disturbances.

It can last for a few months or years with rollercoaster like periods of recovery and relapse.

Diet and lifestyle

Diet and lifestyle

Keep your diet based around fresh organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Live, fresh foods will provide many more nutrients and energy to the body. Go especially for plant foods rich in magnesium, calcium, antioxidants and B vitamins.

Avoid all processed foods, non-organic foods (due to presence or pesticides, herbicides, hormones etc), GM foods (which confuse and unbalance the immune system), refined carbohydrates and sugars and fizzy drinks (blood sugar roller-coaster increases fatigue). These types of food provide very little in the way of useful nutrition and tend to encourage imbalance and disease processes within the body.

Check to see if your tap water is fluoridated. If it is drink either non-fluoridated spring water or consider installing a reverse osmosis water filter to take way all heavy metals and many other toxins.

Drink at least 1 cup of organic green tea daily for its anti-oxidant content.

Rely less on carbohydrates and instead opt for protein rich beans and legumes which provide a more steady supply of energy. Sprouted beans and seeds provide excellent energy and enzymes which help with efficient digestion and can improve digestive distress.

Useful herbs

Useful herbs

Siberian ginseng, Rhodiola rosea, Astragalus, Ashwagandha, Ginseng and all the medicinal mushrooms such as reishi are all extrememly useful in helping the body cope with physical and emotional stresses and help to slowly but surely raise vitality and welness levels. Use in tincture forms or as capsules. Be careful with ginseng (Siberian ginseng is fine) as it can be over stimulating when energy reserves are low and lead to further exhaustion.

Anti-virals include echinacea root, elderberries, wild indigo root, myrrh, lemon balm, schizandra and turmeric.

Nervines that feed and strengthen the nervous system and can be of specific help with M.E symptoms include vervain, st johns wort, ginkgo and gotu kola. Take equal parts as a tea daily.

Read other sections such as memory, insomnia etc to get more ideas on treating specific symptoms of M.E.

Natural healing

Natural healing

If you have mercury fillings in your teeth you may want to look into having them safely replaced with a non toxic alternative.
A process of heavy metal and toxin removal called chelation has helped many sufferers recover or reduce the severity of their symptoms.
Take a teaspoon of cider vinegar in water up to 3 times daily for its cleansing, energising and probiotic effects.
Stop using toxic chemicals in the house for cleaning the home, toiletries, washing clothes etc and switch to more natural, less toxic alternatives.
Don't have vaccinations if at all possible. Most are loaded with extremely toxic substances. Do your own research into them and look for alternatives to them.
Try taking a teaspoon of organic, cold pressed edible coconut oil daily for its anti-viral and energy promoting actions.
