Cyst

General characteristics

General characteristics

A cyst is a fluid, gaseous or solid filled sac like formation, similar to a blister, that forms within the tissues and is effectively sealed off from the rest of the body and circulation by a membrane. The word cyst comes from the Greek word for 'pouch'. They seem to form as an attempt to wall off potentially harmful substances from entering the general circulation.
They often form as a result of a localised infection, damage from an impact or knock, from a blocked or defective secreting duct, in response to prolonged inflammation, tumour formation, parasites, poor diet and under functioning eliminatory channels, side effects of certain pharmaceutical drugs or wear and tear around joints. They can form in any tissue or organ and common places include the breasts, joints, under the skin, ovaries, kidneys and bladder and on tendons and nerve fibres. Depending on the size and location of the cyst/s, there may or may not be pain or other symptoms.
Cysts can resolve themselves but will often need help to discharge themselves or be removed surgically.
Herbs and natural healing looks to improve the elimination channels of the body (skin, kidneys, lungs, lymph and bowels), remedy the possible causes of cyst formation and to gently reduce the size of the cyst until it is gone and prevent further occurrences.

Diet and lifestyle

Diet and lifestyle

If you are prone to cysts then you need to cut out junk and convenience foods and focus instead on freshly prepared vegetables, fruits and grains etc. Limit sugar and anything containing artificial additives.

Eat organic foods wherever possible to cut down on the number of toxins entering the body.

Eat plenty of plant based fibre to encourage effective elimination via the bowels. Daily salads containing leaves and grated veg will provide plenty. A decent bowl of homemade muesli containing fruit, grains and nuts and seeds will also provide plenty of fibre.

Drink plenty of water, herb teas and freshly squeezed citrus juices.

Include plenty of garlic, onions, leeks, chives etc for their blood moving and anti-bacterial effects. Warming spices like cayenne and ginger will also be useful.

Use seaweeds in your cooking by adding to soups or sprinkling it dried over meals. All the edible seaweeds are rich in detoxifying nutrients.

Add a good handful of fresh watercress to your daily salads to benefit from their potent cyst dissolving properties.

Useful herbs

Useful herbs

Herbs to take internally include the herbs that stimulate the lymphatic system such as cleavers, marigold, mullein, chickweed, violet leaf, fenugreek seeds, plantain and nettle. Use a heaped teaspoon of the mixed herbs per cup and take 2-3 cups daily until the cysts are resolved.
A useful formula for deeply penetrating and enhancing the elimination channels of the body could include the tinctures of poke root (5ml), figwort (15ml), dandelion root (50ml), burdock root (30ml), blue flag (30ml) and yellow dock (50ml). An example of appropriate amounts needed is provided in brackets after each herb. Mix the herbs into a big bottle and take 1/2 teaspoon in water 3 times daily. Take for 2 weeks or so to kick start the cleansing process.
Try strong echinacea tincture or tea, one teaspoon up to 5 times daily of the tincture or 3 cups daily of dried root tea (1 heaped teaspoon of root per cup).
Marshmallow root or leaves and walnut leaves or husks can be used as a poultice to soften, draw and disperse cysts near the skin. Use a tablespoon of each, simmer for 20 minutes and apply to the skin whilst the herbs are warm. Leave on for a few hours and repeat daily with a fresh batch of herbs.
Skin cleansing herbs such as boneset can help to clean the blood and speed up resolution of cysts.

Natural healing

Natural healing

Gently rubbing warm castor oil into the skin where the cyst is located will help to disperse the cyst. For deeper cysts (ovarian, kidney etc) soak a pad or cloth in warm caster oil and leave on for several hours or overnight. Placing a hot water bottle over the castor oil pack will enhance the penetrative powers of the castor oil.
Take a teaspoon of cider vinegar in a little water 2-3 times daily with meals.
The tissue salt calcarea flourica or calcium floride is said to be beneficial in the healing and prevention of cysts.
